Resthaven Funeral Home was established by lifelong Sinton resident Yvonne Cantu-Moran in March 2007. Yvonne graduated Sinton High School and Commonwealth College of Funeral Service in Houston, Texas. She has worked extensively in the funeral industry since 1991. Yvonne was employed as a Funeral Director/Embalmer by Allison Funeral Services in Liberty, Texas, Memory Gardens Funeral Home in Corpus Christi, Texas and as Manager at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton, Texas. Yvonne is the daughter of Guadalupe Cantu and the late Charlie Cantu. Yvonne and husband, Lee, have two daughters, Autumn and Brittany.

Antonia Z. Escobar passed away July 29, 2009. She was 87.
Born on October 22, 1921, in Edroy, Texas to Marcelo and Albina Moreno Zapata, Antonia spent most of her life in Sinton, and most recently in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was employed with the Leo Owen family, Dr. and Mrs. Harren, the Newman family and the Lewis family with over 60 years of dedicated service.
She was a member of Our Lady Guadalupe Church in Sinton, a Guadalupana, Crusillista and Hijas de Maria Society.
Survivors include two grandchildren: Sandra and Sharon Escobar; a daughter-in-law: Rose S. Escobar; one great-grandchild: Alexandria Holland Escobar, all of Corpus Christi, Texas.
Preceding in death is her husband, Armando Escobar, and her parents, Marcelo and Albina Escobar; a son: Armando Escobar, Jr; two sisters and one brother.

Ethel Lou (Owen) Simpson passed away July 26, 2009 at her residence with her family at her side. She was 80.
Mrs. Simpson was born on June 24, 1929 to Martin and Naomi Bean Owen in Waco, Texas. A native of Waco, she became a resident of Sinton in 1968.
Survivors include her husband: Grover Simpson of Sinton, Texas; two sons: Grover Craig (Gerry) Simpson of Bellville, Texas and Judge Terry Alan (Hilda) Simpson of Sinton, Texas; one daughter: Belinda Gail (John Henry) Tracy of Sinton, Texas; one brother: Jerry Owen of Waco, Texas; two sisters: Linda Christian of Taylor, Texas and Wilma Bearden of Waco, Texas; three grandchildren: Jonathan Craig (Lisa) Simpson of Round Rock, Texas; Leslie Elyse (Brett) Carsey of Somerville, Texas; and Tara Elaine Simpson of San Antonio, Texas.
Preceding in death are her parents: Martin and Naomi Owen and numerous siblings.

Fidel G. “Mil Amores” Longoria, 82, died Friday, July 10, 2009, in Corpus Christi, Texas.
He was born in Floresville on May 5, 1927 and lived in Sinton most his life where he was a farmer employed by 3 generations of the Houser Family.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Antonio Longoria and Tomasita Garza Longoria; his wife: Mercedes Longoria; two sons: Enrique Longoria and David Longoria; and daughter-in-law: Hope Longoria.

James Michael Whitten passed away on Friday, June 26, 2009. He was born on November 11, 1942, in Sinton, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Helen, his children, Allison of Houston and William of Kerrville, and his sister, Susan Edwards of Corpus Christi. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Isabel Whitten of Odem.
Jim was a 1960 graduate of Odem High School, a 1964 graduate of the University of Texas, and a 1966 graduate of the University of Texas School of Law. After graduating from law school he joined the United States Air Force, where he attained the rank of Captain. Jim served as a JAG and reparations officer during the Vietnam War. After returning from Vietnam in 1970, Jim opened the Law Offices of James M. Whitten in Sinton. In 1983 he opened an office in Corpus Christi. Jim loved the practice of law and practiced in South Texas for 43 years. Jim was a Fellow of the State Bar of Texas and a member of the Corpus Christi and San Patricio Bar Associations. He also served as Chairman of the District 11-B Grievance Committee from 1983-1988 and City Attorney for the city of Odem.
Jim was a loving father and husband. His love of life, wisdom, and guidance will be greatly missed by all of his family members and friends.

Jose S. “El Chapote” Garcia, 56, lifelong resident of Odem, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 20th, 2009, after a short battle with cancer. He was a retired employee of San Patricio County Precinct 2. Jose had a love for animals and was exceptionally proud of his grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his father, Manuel Garcia, Jr; and sisters Estella Garcia and Jesusita Perez.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Gloria Garcia of Odem; 3 daughters: Norma (David) Villalobos of Taft, Patricia (Armando) Lira and Monica (George) Garcia, of Odem; 2 sons: Joe Manuel Garcia and Anthony Garcia of Odem; his mother: Micaela Garcia of Odem; one sister: Elda Garcia of Odem; 2 brothers: Milton (Nora) Garcia and Steven Garcia of Odem; 11 beloved grandchildren; and many friends and relatives.
