2013007_1_copy.jpgMyra Beth Dragoo, age 76, passed away January 10, 2013 after a prolonged illness from a stroke, Parkinsons and Alzheimers diseases. Myra was born April 16, 1936 in Burke, Angelina County, Texas to Martin D. Allbritton and Henrietta Moore Allbritton. After the age of 5, she lived with her mother and step-father, E.E. Zuch, growing up in Corpus Christi, Texas where she attended schools and worked for Citizens Standard Life Insurance Co. Myra and her future husband, L.D. “Bill” Dragoo first met at a county-western dance in 1957 and were married April 5, 1958 in San Antonio, Texas.  They resided in Corpus Christi until 1960, then moved to Sinton. They continued to enjoy dancing most of their married life. Myra and Bill were blessed with four sons. The eldest, William, died in infancy. She was a member of Sinton Presbyterian Church and sang in the church choir for over 50 years.

Martin, Johnny Wayne

 2013006_1.jpgJohnny Wayne Martin Sr. 62, of Alice, TX passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2013 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.  At his request, no service will be held. He was born on February 13, 1950 in Matador, Texas to Joseph and Juanita Jo Martin. He was in the 82nd Airborne Division, is a veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. He worked for Fru-Con Construction for many years as well as Proctor & Gamble.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Wilson; his children, Johnny Martin Jr. of Kentucky, Rebecca Armstrong (Trey) of Kentucky, Anthony Estrada of Ohio and Brandy Ricks of Ohio; Two stepchildren, Trisha Wilson of Indiana and Kurt Wilson of Indiana; thirteen grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and Two siblings, Thomas Martin (Carla) of Alice, Texas and Pamela Martin of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Juanita Jo (Holden) Martin; his brother, BJ Martin and his father, Joseph Martin.

Byrd, Jerry Wilton

2013004_1.jpgJerry Wilton Byrd, 70, resident of Corpus Christi, passed away on December 30, 2012, while visiting lifelong friends in Dallas, Texas.

He was born in Nacogdoches, TX, on March 16, 1942, to Ima Lee Solomon and Otis Wilton Byrd.  He was the older of two siblings. 

He was raised in Nacogdoches, Texas, where he graduated High School in 1960.  Jerry attended Steven F. Austin University from 1960-1962 where he majored in History and minored in Government.  In 1962 Jerry met Carolyn who would become the love of his life.  Jerry and Carolyn were married on June 5, 1965 in Bellaire, Texas; celebrating over 47 years of marriage.  Jerry began working at an early age, from 1959-1961 he worked as a night dispatcher for the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Department.  He then went into business with his father in Nacogdoches selling parts at Byrd & Son Sinclair Station.  A few years later the station was sold and Jerry began work at NIBCO of Texas in the engineering Department.  In 1967, Jerry was accepted to the Department of Public Safety recruit school.  On June 23, 1967 Jerry graduated from the DPS Academy as a patrolman and was stationed in Mathis.  During his time in Mathis he received the nickname, "Dirty Bird" from many of the motorist he encouraged to be law abiding. 

Luna, Ricardo G. "Rico"

2013005_1.jpgRicardo “Rico” G. Luna died January6, 2013. He was 71. Ricardo was born on July 22, 1941 to Francisco and Rosa Garcia Luna. He was a lifelong resident of Odem, Texas. Ricardo was a pipefitter for more than 25 years who worked for H & K Construction in Sinton, Texas.

Survivors include sons: Richard (Linda) Luna, Jr. of Sinton, Texas and Ramiro (Gracie) Luna of Sinton, Texas; daughters: Rose Mary (Rene) Benavidez of Edroy, Texas; Dora Luna of Corpus Christi, Texas; Gloria (Tommy Hernandez)  Luna of Sinton, Texas; Margie (Adolfo) Morin of Odem, Texas; brothers: Angel Luna, Jessie Luna, Robert Sr. (Janie) Luna and Leroy (Nancy) Luna, all of Odem, Texas; sisters: Maria Luna of Odem, Texas; Juanita (Silviano) Cardenas of Sinton, Texas; Virginia (Juan) Torres of Odem, Texas; Frances Rangel of Robstown, Texas; and Rosie (Willie) Flores of Robstown, Texas; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Preceding Ricardo in death is his wife Modesta Ochoa Luna; parents Frank and Rosa Luna; sister Margarita Luna; and brother Juan Luna.

Visitation began Wednesday, January 9, 2013, 2:00 PM, at Resthaven Funeral Home, Sinton. A rosary was held the same evening, 7:00 PM, at the funeral home. The funeral mass was celebrated Thursday, January 10, 2013, 10:00 AM, at Sacred Heart Church in Odem, Texas with Father Pete Elizardo as celebrant. Burial followed at San Pedro Cemetery, Odem. Pallbearers were Rene Benavidez, Alfredo Ramirez, Robert Serna, Jr., Adolfo Morin, Jr. Mario Nino, Jr., and Lupe Marin, Jr.

Cantu, Adrian R.

2013003_1.jpgAdrian R. Cantu died January 6, 2013. He was 69. Adrian was born on August 28, 1943 in Robstown, Texas. His mother, Beatriz, passed away six weeks after his birth leaving Amnando P. and Belia C. Cantu to raise him. He was a resident of Sinton, Texas since 1966 and worked as a truck driver and mechanic for many years.

Survivors include his wife Minerva Cantu of Sinton, Texas; sisters Irma Gonzalez of Rios, Texas and Olga Silva of California; daughters Estella (James) Cannady of Sacramento, California; Esmeralda (Manuel) Venegas of Corpus Christi, Texas and Julie (Martin) Davila of Sinton, Texas; sons Eugene (Esmeralda) DeLeon of Sinton, Texas; Ernest (Elizabeth) DeLeon of Banquette, Texas; Rey (Cindy) DeLeon of Corpus Christi, Texas; Joe (Ruby) Sanchez of Sinton, Texas; 31 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Eusebio Galvan, Jr., Elly Gonzalez, Jr., Juan Trevino, Joey Cruz, Adrian Cruz and Marcos Esparza.

Preceding Adrian in death are his parents; daughter Beatrice Cantu; first wife Josephina D. Cantu; brother Alvino Cantu and son Lorenzo C. Sanchez.

We would like to thank Hospice Odyssey for all their continuous care and compassion; and Lee Johnson, who cared for Adrian, and became a close and trusted friend.

Visitation began Tuesday, January 8, 2013, 1:00 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home, Sinton. A rosary was celebrated the same evening, 7:00 PM, at the funeral home. The funeral mass was held Wednesday, January 9, 2013, 1:00 PM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Sinton with Father Patrick Serna as celebrant. Burial followed at Eternal Rest Cemetery, Sinton.
