Sgt. Anselmo "BJ" Martinez, III, 26, of Fort Hood, Texas and formerly of Robstown, Texas, died May 18, 2007 in Tahrir, Iraq from wounds suffered when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using an improvised explosive device. Sgt. Martinez was a Gunner in the United States Army. Martinez joined the military in November 2001, after 9/11, as an infantryman . He attended One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, GA from November 2001-April 2002. His first duty station was Fort Benning, GA. where he was assigned to 1st Battalion, 29th Infantry. While assigned to 1/29 Martinez attended Airborne School in September 2002. He re-enlisted in November 2004 and PCSed to Fort Hood, Texas where he was assigned 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division since October 2005. Martinez attended PLDC from March-April 2006. He also deployed to JRTC in Ft. Polk, LA in May 2006. Sgt. Martinez was deployed with 1/12 Cav, 3 HBCT in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom IV. Martinez’s military awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Posthumous awards include Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Infantryman’s Badge.
Visitation will begin Saturday, May 26, 2006, 8:00 AM, at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel in Sinton, Texas. Rosary will be recited Saturday, May 26, 2007, 7:00 PM, at the funeral home. Prayer service will be held Sunday, May 27, 2007, 7:00 PM, at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, May 28, 2007, 1:00 PM, St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 204 Dunne St. in Robstown, Texas. Private burial services will follow.
Survivors include his wife: Christina Hernandez Martinez of Fort Hood, Texas; 2 daughters: Felicity Elise and Eliana Rhea Martinez of Fort Hood, Texas; parents: Anselmo and Diana Martinez of Robstown, Texas; 2 brothers: Davi (Leticia) Espinoza and Alejandro Martinez of Corpus Christi, Texas; 3 sisters: Gabriela Espinoza and Belinda Espinoza of Robstown, Texas, Galdina (Rogelio) Ibarra of Corpus Christi, Texas; in-laws: Pedro Hernandez of Sinton, Texas, Elena (John) Carlow of Sinton, Texas; maternal grandfather: Serapio S. Garcia of Corpus Christi, Texas; paternal grandparents: Anselmo (Margarita) Martinez of Robstown, Texas; brothers-in-law: Pedro "Blue" Hernandez, Jr. of Odem, Texas, Roland (Chris) Ovalle and Gabriel Hernandez of Sinton, Texas; sisters-in-law: Felicia (Phillip) Lumbreras of Brownsville, Texas, Sandra (Anthony) Stewart of Sinton, Texas; Numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles;
A maternal grandmother, Galdina Garcia and uncle, Eduardo Garcia precede him in death. The United States Army will render honors as pallbearers.
