Chic, Grace

Mrs. Grace Chick was born in Hamilton County, Texas on May 26, 1916 to John Irving and Beulah Bradley Giles.  In 1924 the family moved from Comanche, Texas to Sinton, where she was graduated from Sinton High School as valedictorian.  In Sinton, she worked 27 years for Plymouth Oil Company and Marathon Oil Company as secretary to the Vice-President and General Manager.  She later worked for Burnett Law Firm until her retirement, then moved to Trinity Towers, Corpus Christi, in 1996.  She was a former member of the San Patricio Historical Society and the Ladies Golf Association, and was a long-time member of the Church of Christ.

As one of 11 Giles daughters, Grace and her sisters never let more than a day or two pass without talking and laughing together, and they stayed in constant communication in later years keeping up with their growing families’ activities, following the Dallas Cowboys football fortunes, sharing travelogues and silly jokes, gathering to celebrate family occasions, and generally supporting each other in all of life’s events from euphoria about the birth of babies to despair over chronic illnesses and finally sadness at the passing of loved ones.  The old Giles’ homestead in Sinton was the hub of joyful gatherings for many, many years and provided a wealth of treasured memories of good food, raucous fun, growing children, and the sweet, harmonious voices of the Giles sisters raised together in song.

Mrs. Chick was predeceased by her husband, Carleton M. Chick, in 1985; her parents; and seven of her sisters.  Grace was beloved by her sisters for her delightful sense of humor, dependability and positive outlook on life, and was cherished by her nieces and nephews for her lifelong enthusiasm, interest and support for all of their educational and career accomplishments.  She is survived by three sisters: Ima Jean Eddy of San Antonio, Texas, Jo Danford of Portland, Texas and Tommy Eichblatt of Corpus Christi, Texas; two step-children:  Jare Chick and Barbara Bradeson, both of California; several nieces and nephews, extended family, and loving friends.  Grace will be sorely missed but her sweet spirit will live on in the hearts of family and friends.

Visitation will begin Monday, August 23, 2010, 8:00 AM, at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel in Sinton followed by services at 10:00 AM with Dr. Lindsey Garmon officiating.  Burial will follow in Sinton Cemetery, Sinton, Texas.
