January 16, 1926 – November 18, 2019
Agapito (Pito) T. Rodriguez, Jr., 93, of Taft, Texas, was called by the Lord to his heavenly home on November 18, 2019. He was born in Taft to Agapito T. Rodriguez, Sr. and Tomasa de la Torre Rodriguez. Mr. Rodriguez was a lifelong resident of Taft. He attended Taft High School, and was called to service in the U.S. Army in 1944. He was part of “The Greatest Generation” that saved this country from the forces of fascism and tyranny during the Second World War. He received an honorable discharge in 1946, having served with an artillery unit of the Army’s 78th Lightning Infantry Division. He returned to Taft to marry his hometown sweetheart, Mary Gonzales, in 1947. He worked as a grocer in his father’s general store for a number of years before attending barber college and opened a barber shop in 1961, which he operated until his retirement. Pito and Maria had four children: Mary Lucille Guajardo (Daniel); Alonso (Silvana); J. Andrew (Louise); and Tessie Sturgeon (Rudy). Pito was a lifelong member of Immaculate Conception Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family and siblings, who lived in Taft. He enjoyed watching baseball, particularly the Atlanta Braves and Houston Astros. He loved watching live sports events, especially when his grandchildren played on local school teams. He had an engaging sense of humor and was gracious to all. He will be sorely missed. Preceding in death is his beloved wife, Maria; brother, Alonzo T. Rodriguez; and sisters: Ofelia Rodriguez and Herminia Gonzalez. Survivors include his four children; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
