Roy James Floerke

Roy James Floerke, 86, passed peacefully on May 26, 2017, at his home in Taft, following a brief illness. 

Roy was born in Taft, Texas, on August 4, 1930, to parents Hattie Shilhab and Max August Floerke. He was the youngest of three siblings; brother to Maxie Floerke, of Taft, who predeceased him, and sister, Mildred Floerke Irving, of Glasgow, Montana.

He leaves his loving wife of 62 years, Ora Marie Dowling (P.D.) Floerke and children, James Benton and Linda Floerke of Lampasas, Texas, Brenda Marie Floerke of Victoria, Texas, Max Bradford and Kris Floerke of Portland, Texas, Odom Barton Floerke of Portland, Texas, Jim Miller, Herschel Vansickle, and family friend, Olivia Sanchez of Taft, Texas.

Grandchildren, Sarah Leigh and Steve Gouak, of Austin, Texas, August James and Brooke Floerke, of Fort Collins, Colorado, Chase Daniel Cullison of San Marcos, Texas, Cole Christopher Floerke of Portland, Texas, Brooke Ann Floerke, of Portland, Texas, and Abigail Marie Floerke, of Portland, Texas.

Roy was lovingly known as their "Big Daddy". He graduated from Taft High School in 1947.  He also graduated from Shreiner College in Kerrville, in 1949 and Texas A&I University in 1952, Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

Roy was a lifetime farmer.  He was actively engaged in his community through many different organizations.  He served on the Board of Directors of The First National Bank of Taft for 27 years.  He also served on the boards of Midway Gin and Grain Co-op, Taft Blackland Museum, and The Taft Hospital.  He was elected and re-elected numerous times to the Taft City Council and also served as Mayor Pro Tem.

He volunteered as a Leader and Scoutmaster with Boy Scouts of America, Troop 342, for 16 years.  He is the father of three Eagle Scouts. 

He was a charter member of the Taft Jaycees and served as President.

Roy received the "Outstanding Citizen of the Year" Award from the Taft Kiwanis Club in 1968, and the "Humanitarian Award" from the Taft Chamber of Commerce in 1986.

Roy was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Taft.

He enjoyed friends and family while playing dominoes at a table in the Frio River at Concan, sitting around the fire at hunting camp, and walking along the beach with a good cigar.  He leaves a big hole in the hearts of many.  Job well done, good and faithful servant.

Visitation will be held Monday, May 29, 2017 at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel in Sinton. Family will receive guests from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be Tuesday, May 30, 2017, 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Taft. Burial will follow in the Palms Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Taft.

Pallbearers will be Billy Floerke, Troy Floerke, Keith Floerke, Dave Irving, Monte Floerke, Tom Mayo, Sammy Floerke, Wesley Schmidt, Jason Floerke and Joe Easterwood.

The family thanks Dr. Mark Strauss and nurses, Crystal, Lisa, Suzanne, and Vicky, National Nursing and Rehab, Fellowship Hospice, and Pastors, Dale Pogue, Cliff Krcha, and Larry Mayo.
