Abel Arturo Vargas

Gregory – Abel Arturo Vargas passed away peacefully at his home in McAllen with his loving family by his side on August 27, 2020. He was 79.

Abel was born on September 8, 1941 in Gregory, Texas. He was raised by his grandmother, Cristina Cantu. In High School, Abel was quarterback, ran track and played trumpet in the band. He married Irene Alvarado at the age of 22 (she was 19) on September 5, 1964.  Abel was a veteran having served his country in the US Army. He was stationed in El Paso where he and Irene raised three children. Abel was very involved in his children’s lives and their sporting activities. He attended night school and obtained his Masters Degree in Business from the University of Texas at El Paso. Abel was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. The last 20 years of his life, Abel moved his family moved to McAllen where he taught GED classes. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather who was kind, intelligent, non-judgmental and family-oriented. Abel will be missed by all who knew him.

Preceding in death are his mother: Soila; and his grandmother: Cristina Cantu.

Survivors include his wife of almost 56 years: Irene Vargas, nee Alvarado; his children: Abel Vargas (Lisa), Raphael Vargas (Mary Ann) and Sonia Vargas (Danny Leal); grandchildren: Brooke Mayfield (Seth), Evan Vargas and Raphael Vargas.

Visitation will begin Monday, August 31, 2020, 4:00 PM at the Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel in Aransas Pass. A Holy Rosary will be recited the same evening, 7:00 PM at the funeral home. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 1, 2020, 10:00 AM at the Immaculate Conception Church in Gregory. Burial will follow in Gregory Cemetery.
