Apolonio "Polo" R. Cantu Obituary

Ingleside — Apolonio “Polo” R. Cantu, born April 10, 1939, departed this life on December 23, 2025, to join and twirl through the heavens with his loving wife of 26 years, Mary L. Cantu.

Polo dedicated over 50 years of his life to Garrett Construction and Live Oak Materials, where he proudly served as both a deckhand and captain. A hardworking man, he was equally known for his joyful spirit.

When he wasn’t working, Polo and Mary could often be found twirling across dance floors together, sharing their love of music and dancing. Polo took great pride in talking with people and making them laugh—he had a joke for everyone and truly never met a stranger.

Polo and Mary loved all of their grandchildren deeply; however, he shared a profound and special bond with his three granddaughters, Destiny, Aliza, and Deserae Martinez, whom they lovingly raised for 11 years.

Polo was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lydia Cantu; son, Louis Aguilar; parents, Guadalupe Cantu and Guadalupe Rodriguez; sisters: Janie Pena and Frances Jimenez; and brother, Eugene Cantu.

He is survived by his sons, Rene Aguilar and Chris Aguilar of Corpus Christi, Texas; daughters, Rose Marie Rivera of Ingleside, Texas, and Emily M. Cantu of Corpus Christi, Texas; 16 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and his sister, Lupita Cuellar of Taft, Texas.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 31, 2025, from 12:00 PM. to 2:00 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel in Aransas Pass, Texas. Burial will follow at Gregory Cemetery in Gregory, Texas.
