Taft- Betty Jo Thorp

Betty Jo went to be with the Lord in the early morning of May 31st, 2023 in Los Angeles, California where she lived with her daughter, son-in-law, and two grandchildren; she was 83 years old.

Betty Jo Bingham Thorp was born to Barney and Bertha Bingham on August 31, 1939 in San Antonio, Texas. Betty Jo was raised in Skidmore, Texas by her mother, Bertha Jane Fraser Bingham, and grandmother, Bertha Josephine Fraser. She was baptized in the Skidmore Baptist Church at the age of 11.

At the age of 12, in 1952, she and her mother moved to Sinton, Texas, where she graduated from Sinton High School in 1957. She married after high school and gave birth to two children, Stephanie and Sabrina Schwenke. On May 14, 1965, Betty Jo married Lester Hiram Thorp, and they had two more daughters, Leslie Ann and Joey Ann. They lived in Portland from 1965-1975 and then moved to Taft. While in Taft, Betty Jo belonged and was involved at the First Baptist Church in every capacity. She loved her church and church friends. She also held many offices in the Woman’s Club of Taft, such as president, secretary, fundraiser, etc. She also held the Taft library close to her heart. Most of all, she loved her family and cared for their every need. She was a stay-at-home mom until her youngest was out of college. She then went to work at the Northshore Country Club and then the Nueces Club in Corpus Christi. Her Christian beliefs and faith made her a strong, loving and giving person whom everyone benefited from daily.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Bertha and Barney Bingham, and her daughters Stephanie Scwenke and Joey Ann Thorp.

Betty Jo is survived by her daughters Sabrina Schwenke and Leslie Thorp Culp and son-in-law Clint Culp; and the loves of her life, her grandchildren, William Schwenke, Sarah Anna Jo Culp and Ellie Thorp Culp. Clint, Leslie, AJ, and Ellie will miss her beautiful baby blue eyes that lit up their lives. Per Mom’s request, she also leaves her lifelong friends, Beverley Anderson and Judy Fonville, whom she loved like sisters she never had.

Visitation will begin Tuesday, June 6, 2023, 12:00 PM, at First Baptist Church, Taft. Funeral service will follow, 1:00 PM, at the church. A Graveside Service will follow in Sinton Cemetery, Sinton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to South Texas Children’s Home.
