Charles Lewis Obituary

Refugio-Charles was born on Thursday, March 12, 1953, he departed this life on Thursday July 28, 2022. Charles attended school on Refugio 1st-8th grade at Barefield School and graduated from Refugio High School in 1971. Charles loved football and was a member of the Refugio Bobcat team #56 that brought home a State Championship in 1970. After graduation Charles left to begin his adulthood in Dallas, Texas. He worked at Sears and Roebuck warehouse for many years after which he operated a franchise Blimpie Sandwiches.

Charles returned to Refugio to reclaim as home. He was employed as Victoria ISD for a short while and the HEB for over 10 years; during this time, he also launched and operated another business; a hangout to play pool/billiards, cards, dominoes and a few arcade games. He was the pioneer that started the little league football here in Refugio, Texas with boys from Refugio, Woodsboro and even Corpus Christi. They played other small towns with a similar league (Goliad, Karnes City and Kennedy) and won the championship.

Charles was a Christian who is now peacefully resting until the day of the Lord’s return. He gave his life to Christ at an early age here at the St. Luke Baptist Church. Charles faithfully served at St. Luke’s as an usher who often would give you a slight head nod and shy half smile.

Charles had children later in life, three boys. There wasn’t ever a conversation with him that did not include him saying “my boys”. He was the storyteller of the family, gathering around many nights to hear him tell a story; sometimes funny, sometimes scary. He put that talent to the test and wrote and published a children’s book, “The Journey of Teardrops and Sniffles”. Charles’ journey has been paused while he rests, waiting for his wake-up call.

Charles is preceded in death by his father, Edward Lewis; mother, Annie Lewis; brothers, John Lewis, Victor Lewis and Claude Lewis; sister, Doris Lewis-Venson.

He leaves to cherish his memories: sons: Kaden Lewis, Jaydus and Teyren Lewis all from Refugio, Texas; brothers: Jimmie (Cynthis) and Donald from Refugio, Texas, Edward (Nicie) from Lancaster, Texas, Clarence from Red Oak, Texas, David from Fort Worth, Texas and Vincent (Jessica) from Corpus Christi, Texas; sisters: Annie Terrell from Cedar Hill, Texas, Verna (Carl) Boyce from Carrollton, Texas and Lonie (Claudius) Alexander from Corpus Christi, Texas and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.
