Daniel R. Meza, 89, passed away at Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas, surrounded by the love of his family. In his final moments, Daniel was surrounded by what had always mattered most to him—the people he loved. A devoted husband, beloved father and grandfather, proud veteran, hardworking provider, and faithful servant of the Lord, Daniel leaves behind a legacy that will continue through the many generations of his family.

Daniel was born on October 18, 1936, in Yorktown, Texas, to Lucia Rodriguez. From humble beginnings, he grew into a man whose life was defined by hard work, quiet strength, deep faith, and an unwavering devotion to his family.

One of the greatest blessings of Daniel’s life began when he found the love of his life, Bertha Perez. The two were married on May 13, 1961, in Corpus Christi, Texas, beginning a beautiful journey together that would span more than 65 years. Through every season of life—the joyful ones, the difficult ones, raising a family, watching their children grow, welcoming grandchildren and eventually great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren—Daniel and Bertha remained by one another’s side.

Together, they built far more than a home; they built a family and a legacy. Bertha, a lifelong resident of Taft, Texas, and Daniel more recently made their home at Brookdale Northshore Senior Living in Portland, Texas. After more than six decades of marriage, theirs was the kind of love that had been tested by time and strengthened through faith, commitment, patience, and countless shared memories. Bertha was not only Daniel’s wife; she was his lifelong companion, the woman with whom he shared his family, his faith, and the story of his life.

Daniel proudly served his country as a member of the United States Armed Forces and received his Honorable Discharge on February 11, 1959. His service reflected the same qualities he carried throughout his life—dedication, responsibility, and a willingness to work hard for those who depended upon him.

Following his military service, Daniel spent many years working as a mechanic at the Corpus Christi Army Depot. He was a hardworking man who understood the importance of providing for his family. He did not need recognition for the sacrifices he made; knowing that his wife and children were cared for was enough. His hands worked hard throughout his life, but everything he did was rooted in love for his family.

As proud as Daniel was of his work and military service, nothing compared to the pride he had in being a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather.

His family was truly the center of his world.

Daniel loved family gatherings because they gave him the opportunity to have everyone he loved together in one place. As his family grew through the years, so did his heart. There was something incredibly special about seeing the generations that came after him gathered together—children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Each one represented another piece of the beautiful legacy Daniel and Bertha began together so many years ago.

Some of the simplest moments became the most treasured. Sundays could be spent surrounded by his sons and family, watching sports and cheering for his Dallas Cowboys or Los Angeles Dodgers. To others, it may have simply looked like a football or baseball game, but to Daniel, those moments meant time with his family—and time with family was never taken for granted.

Daniel also enjoyed traveling and experiencing new places. He carried a sense of adventure with him and was grateful for the opportunity to see more of the world alongside those he loved. One of those special memories was his final trip to Alaska, an experience his family will forever remember as another chapter in a life filled with meaningful moments.

Perhaps the greatest foundation of Daniel’s life, however, was his faith. Daniel did not simply speak about his faith—he lived it. He was a devoted parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Taft, where he served as a CCD coordinator, attended Cursillo, and volunteered whenever he could. He faithfully attended daily and Sunday Mass and believed deeply in serving his church and community.

Those who knew Daniel well will remember something especially personal about him: his little prayer book. He carried it with him and would often spend quiet moments praying privately. Those prayers were between Daniel and the Lord he trusted so completely. His faith was not something reserved only for Sunday mornings; it accompanied him throughout his everyday life, through celebrations and hardships, through raising his family, growing older, and ultimately through his final journey.

Daniel trusted in the Lord. That faith now brings comfort to the family who must learn to carry on without his physical presence. While their hearts are heavy, they know that Daniel lived his life believing wholeheartedly in the promise of eternal life and trusting that one day those who love one another will be together again.

Daniel is preceded in death by his beloved son, Daniel Meza, Jr.; mother, Lucia Rodriguez; brothers, Raymond Rodriguez, Manuel Garcia, and Jose Riojas; sisters, Maria Hernandez and Lupita Menchaca; grandson, Trey Trujillo; and granddaughter, Denise G. Ramirez.

Left to carry forward the love and legacy he created is his beloved wife of more than 65 years, Bertha P. Meza; his children, Glinda Pritchett (Roger), Velma Pena, Marylou Garcia, Ray Trujillo (Cecilia), and Roland Meza (Sandra); and his brother, Frank Garcia of Gary, Indiana.

Daniel is lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Billy Jalomo, Edward Pena, Robert Pena, Eric Pena, Jon Michael Pena, Alfred Garcia, Jr., Ray Trujillo, Jr., Roland D. Meza, Kevin Meza, Jeannette R. Jalomo, Danielle Martinez, and Devinn Trujillo.

His beautiful legacy continues through his great-grandchildren: Pete M. Ruiz, Ryan J. Ruiz, Brandon Jalomo, Halen Jalomo, Hendrix Jalomo, Joey Pena, Ayden Pena, Je Lorean Pena, Adrian J. “AJ” Garcia, Zane Trujillo, Brayden Meza, Matthew Meza, Leanna N. Ruiz, Brylie Jalomo, Henleigh Jalomo, Maliah Pena, Elizabeth Baldezar, Alexandra B. Morales, Emiley Gkuillory, Aubrey Garcia, Elliana M. Trujillo, Sofia R. Coello, Camila I. Coello, Aizlynn Meza, Kyleigh Meza, Brooklinn Meza, and Mia Meza.

He is also lovingly remembered by his great-great-grandchildren: Daniel R. Baltazar, Kohen Gillory, Jackson Gillory, Giovanni Galo, Josiah Galo, Marisol Linares, Elena R. Linares, Emery Guillory, and Isabella Suarez.

Eighty-nine years can hold an extraordinary amount of life. Daniel’s held a loving marriage of more than six decades, children he was proud of, generations of grandchildren he adored, years of honest work, service to his country, adventures and travels, Sundays spent watching his favorite teams, countless family gatherings, and a lifetime of prayers. But perhaps Daniel’s greatest accomplishment cannot be measured in years at all.

It can be seen in the family he leaves behind. It lives in the stories they will continue to tell, the traditions they will carry forward, the lessons they learned by watching him, and the faith he demonstrated throughout his life. It will be felt every time his family gathers and realizes how much of who they are began with Daniel and Bertha.

His chair may now be empty at family gatherings, and Sundays will feel different without him there watching the Cowboys or Dodgers alongside his family. His little prayer book will serve as a reminder of the quiet faith he carried. There will be countless moments when those who loved him will wish they could hear his voice, see his smile, or simply sit beside him one more time.

But love like Daniel’s does not disappear. It remains in his wife, his children, and every generation that follows. It remains in more than 65 years of memories shared with Bertha. It remains in the lessons he taught, the sacrifices he made, the prayers he prayed, and the family he loved with his whole heart.

Daniel was a good and kindhearted man. He worked hard. He loved deeply. He served proudly. He prayed faithfully. And he leaves this world having given his family something that time can never take away—a lifetime of beautiful memories and a legacy of love and faith that will continue for generations to come.

While Daniel will be deeply and painfully missed, his family finds comfort in the faith he held so closely throughout his life. They entrust him now into the loving arms of the Lord he faithfully served, knowing that his earthly journey has ended, but his eternal journey has begun.

Until they meet again, Daniel will remain forever loved, forever remembered, and forever a part of the family he treasured above all else.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2026, from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM at Resthaven Funeral Home in Sinton. The Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held the same evening at 7:00 PM at the funeral home.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 14, 2026, at 10:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Church in Taft. Burial will follow at Palms Memorial Gardens in Portland.

A reception will follow burial at Immaculate Conception Church' parish hall in Taft.
