Doris LaVerne Clemons Obituary

Doris LaVerne Butler Clemons passed peacefully on February 18, 2024 with her 2 loving sons at her side and her daughter on Facetime.  LaVerne was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas on June 1, 1932 to Paul and Flora Butler.  She was the oldest of 9 children.

LaVerne married Elmer “Buddy” Clemons on November 9, 1951.  Shortly after, Buddy landed a job with Reynolds Metals Company, so they moved from Malvern, Arkansas to make their home in Aransas Pass, Texas where they became a family with 5 children.

LaVerne loved to cook and sew and was exceptional at both.  No one ever left her house hungry.  After her children were grown and had gone their separate ways, she would cook for anyone that she thought might want a home cooked meal.

In 1992, LaVerne traveled to Washington State with a group of friends and then decided to make a new home for herself in the beautiful little Dutch town of Lynden, Washington.  She made some wonderful friends in Washington and became a faithful member of a lovely church in Canada.  She became a seasoned traveler flying around the country to visit her children, grandchildren and lifelong friends.  In early 2018, LaVerne decided it was time to live closer to family.  Her son, Martin, made a home for her in an apartment building on his property in Henrico, Virginia where she has resided for the past 6 years. LaVerne was still cooking her own meals and sewing her clothes or remaking her “store bought” dresses.

LaVerne is preceded in death by her parents, Paul and Flora Butler of Arkansas; brother Carrol Butler of Reno, Nevada; sister Nora Mae Barton also of Reno, Nevada; sister and brother-in-law Meredith “Reta” & Donald Galbreath of Refugio, Texas;  husband Elmer “Buddy” Clemons (7/30/1928 - 8/15/1970) of Aransas Pass, Tx; son Stanley Clemons (9/29/1952 – 4/10/2021) of Kingsville, Texas; son Phillip Clemons (12/6/1956 – 12/11/1981) of Aransas Pass, Texas; grandson Brandon Fuls (5/23/1988 – 11/14/2016) of Richmond, Virginia;  great grandson, Jacob Barrera (2/16/1992 – 12/22/2020) of Kingsville, Texas and great granddaughter Kenzie Leane Knippa (11/17/2008 – 11/23/2008) of Montgomery, Texas.
