Douglas Norrell Obituary

Douglas Leonard Norrell passed peacefully with his family surrounding him on November 12, 2020. He was born on October 13, 1942, in Haskell, Texas, to Carlton and Mildred Norrell. He was married to the love of his life, Nancy Lee Broughton, for 57 years. He leaves behind his wife, children, siblings and grandchildren. He is survived by his son Gregory Leonard Norrell and partner Lessie Gilstrap, and his daughters Marcia Norrell Rasmussen and husband Steve, Anissa Nash and husband Brad, and Liana Norrell Rock and husband Travis. He is also survived by his siblings: Billie Jean Behl, Barbara Steed, Darrell Norrell and David Norrell. His greatest joy was seeing his grandchildren and spending time with them. He loved and adored his 11 grandchildren: Callen Nash, Sarah Marie Florencio Norrell, Laney Nash, Zoey Nash, Gray Nash, Haley Nash, Cole Rasmussen, Adeline Rock, Luke Douglas Rasmussen, Patrick Carlton Rock and Anderson Rock.

Douglas began his building career in the footsteps of his father Carlton in 1963. He was a builder and designer his whole life. His unique, and one-of-a-kind designs can be found in Rockport, Corpus Christi, Laredo, Houston, and Tomball. He began Little Bay Marine in the 1990s and loved being on the water and working on boats. Many of his lifelong friends he and Nancy met were from his many years spent on Little Bay.

Though spending much of his adult life in Rockport, Douglas was a man of the world and spent many vacations seeing much of the US and other countries.  From family camping trips in Colorado to a quick visit to Argentina before he passed, Doug always enjoyed adventures, especially if they involved good food and wine.   He especially enjoyed his last couple of years RVing with Nancy and getting to enjoy their retirement time together.

Douglas finished his life well. After a 13 month-long hard-fought battle with lung cancer he went home to be with the Lord, his parents, and brother Dink.  His wife and four children were by his side for his peaceful passing. He was a best friend to many who loved him well and stuck by him to the end.   Of all of his accomplishments and the lasting houses he has built, he, without question, believed his greatest one was creating his family; and he taught them all to be guided by the words that “Love is a Decision”.

A private Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, November 19th, 2020.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to Links for Lungs, which is helping fund research for lung cancer.  The family has a personal connection to this organization.
