Ida Hansen Obituary

Ida Louise Marburger Hansen

This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it.  Ps. 118: 24

Ida was born August 11, 1931, in West Sinton, Texas, to Richard and Lydia (Adams) Marburger.  Ida grew up on the family farm where she enjoyed feeding the calves and hated hunting the chicken eggs.  She attended Adams School in West Sinton for grades 1 - 7.  When the Adams School closed, she went to school in Sinton and graduated from Sinton High School in 1948.

After attending Concordia Teacher’s College in Seward, Nebraska, for two years and summers, Ida taught at Trinity Lutheran School in Austin, Texas, for four years.  While there, she taught various grades from two to six.  Ida enjoyed being an active youth leader with the Walther League and many other church and school activities.  She returned to Concordia Teacher’s College and completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1955.  She taught at Trinity Lutheran School in Port Arthur, Texas, for one year.

In 1952, Ida attended the Walther League international convention in Ottawa, Canada, where she met her future husband J.B. “Ben” Hansen.  After a long-distance courtship, they were married in Trinity Lutheran Church in West Sinton on June 9, 1956.  They returned to the family farm where they made their home.  They were blessed with three children - Jenny, Julie, and Richard.

Ida returned to the classroom in Sinton in 1970 and  taught fourth grade for many years and then transferred to the Gifted and Talented program in grades 4-6.  She continued to grow the GT program until her retirement in 1990.  Ida was the founding president of the local chapter of the Texas Professional Educators which later became the Association of Texas Professional Educators.

Ida volunteered for many years with the 4-H program in San Patricio County with the West Sinton 4-H Club.  She was active in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School and served as church organist from time she was 14 years until her death.  She enjoyed working with the Mother’s Day Out program and showing the love of Jesus to small children.  In retirement, Ida returned to her love of sewing and joined sewing related organizations.  Her love of community service sewing led her to spend many hours making items for local and global charities.   Ida and Ben enjoyed national and international travels, often visiting distant family and friends.

Ida was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Lydia Marburger, her husband J.B. “Ben” Hansen, and son Richard J. Hansen.  She is survived by her daughter Jenny Hansen

Gastler and husband Greg of St. Louis, Missouri; her daughter Julie Hansen Dayton and husband Robert of Rockport, Texas; her grandchildren Katherine Gastler of St Louis, Missouri, Matthias Gastler, Tehachapi, California, Steven Dayton and wife Melonie of West Sinton, Texas, and Allison Daniels and husband Justin of Waxahachie, Texas; her great-granddaughter Audrey Nicole Dayton of West Sinton, Texas; and her daughter-in-law Kimberlee Hansen Washington of St Louis, Missouri.
