James “Jim” Richard Vogt Obituary
James “Jim” Richard Vogt went to be with the Lord on September 20, 2026, at the age of 94.
Jim was born January 20, 1932, to Jacob Johannes Vogt and Erma Ruth (Wedel) Vogt. He was the middle child of three, with sisters Ethel Vogt Huxman and Jacqueline Vogt Behr. After graduating from Moundridge High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed at the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station, where he served as an aircraft mechanic.
While stationed in Corpus Christi and visiting a friend in Sinton, Texas, Jim met the love of his life, Isabelle “Izzy” Pitts. They soon married and shared 66 wonderful years together before Isabelle’s passing in 2021. Together, they built a loving family and raised two children, Carol and Bryan.
Jim worked as an auto mechanic at several locations before opening his own business, Jim’s Garage, in Taft, Texas. He proudly owned and operated the business for 24 years. Jim was known throughout the community for his strong work ethic, honesty, and kindness. He was the kind of person who would help anyone, whether a lifelong friend or a complete stranger. Throughout his life, he touched countless people through his willingness to lend a hand and his genuine concern for others.
A man of deep and unwavering faith, Jim was a longtime member and Deacon of First Baptist Church in Taft. He faithfully attended a weekly men’s Bible study led by Larry Mayo, which was an important part of his life and fellowship.
Service to his community was also a cornerstone of Jim’s life. He was a member of the Taft Volunteer Fire Department for more than 32 years and served as Fire Chief for 19 of those years before retiring. He was a longtime member of the Taft Kiwanis Club and served one term as President. He received the Outstanding Club Leadership Award and the Citizenship Award. The Taft Chamber of Commerce also honored Jim with its Humanitarian Award.
Jim enjoyed spending time at his home away from home on the Nueces River at Jones River Bend near Swinney Switch, Texas. In his younger years, he loved water skiing (sometimes right off the pier in his blue jeans), along with fishing and playing 42 with close friends from the river group. He was a kid at heart and loved a good practical joke. His playful spirit and sense of humor brought laughter to those around him.
Above all, Jim loved his family. He loved his children dearly, but he absolutely adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were his greatest source of joy and pride, and the love he gave them will continue through generations.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Isabelle Vogt; his parents, Jacob and Erma Vogt; and his sister, Jacqueline Behr.
He is survived by his children, Carol Vanecek (Mark) and Bryan Vogt (Tricia); grandchildren Ashley Houchin (Adam), Allison Stamport (Dakota), Halie Harrison (Hunter), and Brendon Vogt (Kaitlyn); great-grandchildren Hudson Houchin, Madeline Houchin, Laney Vogt, and Sutton Stamport; and his sister, Ethel Huxman.
Pallbearers are Bryan Vogt, Mark Vanecek, Brendon Vogt, Adam Houchin, Dakota Stamport and Hunter Harrison.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff at Brookdale Senior Living. The assisted living team was wonderful and treated Jim like he was part of their own family. Their kindness, compassion, and care meant so much to Jim and to his family.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 9, 2026, 10:00 a.m., at First Baptist Church in Taft. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m., with the graveside service to follow at Palms Memorial Garden Cemetery in Portland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Taft, PO Box 807, Taft, Texas. 78390.
Jim leaves behind a legacy of service, faith, laughter, friendship, and love. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the many people whose lives he touched.
