John Matsler Obituary

John Michael (Mike) Matsler was born August 31, 1953, in Hampton, Iowa, to Myron L. and Rose M. (Ehrhardt) Matsler.  He died on November 6, 2020, from a series of complications following surgery.  He married Jane E. (Shultz) on September 9, 1978 in Dallas, TX.  They had one son, James R. (Jimmy) Matsler, and had resided in Sinton, TX, since 2001.

Mike was owner operator of South Texas Trailers & Supply, Inc., of Sinton, TX.  He had been with the company from June 1972 until they closed their doors in November 2019.  STTS won numerous high-volume sales awards and built an enviable reputation for customer care that served generations of RV customers. He was also a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for San Patricio County for numerous years.

Over the years Mike has been an avid and skilled sportsman.  He was a competition pistol shooting champion, an amateur bass-fishing champion, stock car racer, champion sprint car racer, and later he was pit crew and master mechanic for Jimmy’s national ranking RC career.  He loved muscle cars and motorcycle riding, and always had at least one of each nearby.  He made many lifelong friends in racing and hobbies.

He was a great story and joke teller with impeccable timing. His sisters will agree he was the smartest sibling – and he would agree to that, too.  He had an incredible memory and was the family historian as he could remember the who/what/when/where and nuances of every family event.

Preceding him were his wife Jane, his parents, brother-in-law Steven Shultz, and Jane’s parents, Orville and Jerry Shultz.  Surviving are his son Jimmy of Sinton, TX, sisters Susan (Michael) Merkler of Sinton, TX, and Lynn (Thomas) Brod of Bulverde, TX, and brother-in-law Richard Schultz of Henderson, NV. Also surviving are one aunt, Fonda Matsler of Amarillo, TX, his boxer Piston, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, and friends scattered around Texas and the rest of the country.

He fought hard to stay here with Jimmy.  He lost this battle but is happily together with his soulmate Jane again.
