John “Johnny” Joe Chavez passed away April 12, 2025 in Taft, Texas. He was 74.
Johnny was born March 12, 1951 to Maria (Serna) and Pedro Chavez in Sinton, Texas. Johnny was a lifelong resident of Taft. He was a Veteran of the United States Army. Johnny was formerly employed as an Aircraft Engine Mechanic by Corpus Christi Army Depot. He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Johnny was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, patriot and friend who will be missed by all who knew him.
Johnny is preceded in death by his parents: Pedro Chavez and Maria Smithwick Serna; twin brother: John George Chavez and Young Samuel Chavez; and sister: Virginia Grace Chavez.
Survivors include his wife: Mary Ann Chavez from Taft, Texas; sons: Tony Orlando Chavez (Valerie) from Taft, Texas; Joe Henry Chavez (Monique) from Annaville, Texas; stepdaughter: Erica Mutchler (Josh) from Taft, Texas; stepsons: Omar Alaniz (Mariah) from Taft, Texas; John Alaniz (Lizeth) from Manor, Texas; Augustine Alaniz from Bishop, Texas; grandchildren: Allison Chavez (Marcus Riojas), Tony Chavez, Jr., Olivia S. Chavez, Elena Chavez, Mellina Chavez; great-granddaughter: Adaline G. Riojas; brothers: Pedro Chavez (Maria) from Ft. Moore, Georgia; Steven Chavez (Karry) from Sinton, Texas; Israel Chapa (Angelica) from Taft, Texas; sisters: Ludivina Aguirre and Nelda Acosta (Johnny), all from Taft, Texas; Pat Chavez (Miguel Lara) from Annaville, Texas; and numerous extended family members.
Visitation will begin Wednesday, April 16, 2025, 9:30 AM at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Taft. The Recitation of the Holy Rosary will follow at the church. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated the same morning, 10:30 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church in Taft. Interment will follow in Lamas Memorial Park Cemetery, Taft.
