Refugio – Juana H. Maldonado, lovingly known as Juanita, passed away on January 16, 2026 in Victoria, Texas after a brief illness. She was 80.

Juanita was born on November 8, 1945 in Taft, Texas to Delfina (Tobias) and Domingo Hiracheta. She made her home in Refugio for more than 21 years and was a former resident of Oregon.

Juanita approached life with passion and determination. A gifted seamstress, she had the remarkable ability to see something she admired and recreate it beautifully at home. Her creativity extended to all forms of craftsmanship — whether wood, plastic, or fabric, she could turn inspiration into something made with her own hands.

She was also an exceptional cook who found joy in preparing meals for the family she cherished so deeply. Juanita loved to travel when she could, and some of her happiest moments were spent outdoors, sitting in the warmth of the sun. The simple pleasure of sunlight on her face made her day complete.

Her family will forever remember her unwavering work ethic, her dedication and the love she poured into everything she did. She will be remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, great‑grandmother, aunt and sister.

Juanita is preceded in death by her husband, Abel Maldonado, Sr.; her son, Abel Maldonado, Jr.; her parents, Domingo and Delfina Hiracheta; and her sister, Dominga Gonzales.

She is survived by her daughter, Amalia “Molly” Pacheco (Efrain) from Refugio, Texas; grandchildren Amanda Andrade (Matthew), Angela Castellano (Samuel) and Santos Castellano; 10 great‑grandchildren; 1 great‑great‑grandchild on the way; brother, Ernesto Hiracheta (Tina from Taft, Texas; bonus granddaughter Lisa “Chana” Perez; and numerous extended family members and friends.
