Sinton – Lucy Zapata Ortiz passed away on May 29, 2024. She was 89.  Lucy was born on July 5, 1934 to Lily (Jimenez) and Francisco (Frank) Zapata in Sinton, Texas. She was raised in St. Paul.  Her father was a well-regarded farmer and entrepreneur.  In addition to owning acreage in St. Paul, the family owned several businesses in Sinton, including a neighborhood theater where Mexican movies and well-known Mexican actors and singers were known to perform.  That is where she met the love, Willie S. Ortiz.

After graduating from Sinton High School, she and Willie were married in December 1953, and started a family.  She began her career in education when her youngest child started first grade.  A teacher’s aide initially, Lucy decided to further her education.  She began attending night classes at Texas A&I University, ultimately achieving her Masters of Education.  She retired from Sinton ISD and Lamar Elementary after 30 years of work she loved.  Throughout these years, Lucy was a well-known baker and cook, a passion she greatly enjoyed. She was a dedicated servant to our Lord and was proud of her Catholic faith.

She was a wife, mother, Nana, mentor, counselor and kind friend to many.  Although very successful in her career, she considered her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren to be her most cherished gifts.

Lucy is preceded in heaven by her husband: Willie Ortiz.

She leaves to carry on her legacy: Cindy Ortiz, Doris Ortiz, Bill and Lisa Ortiz, Ray Zapata; grandchildren: Matteo Doebbler, Kelci Ortiz, Kori Ortiz; great-grandchildren: Jeramih, Amora, Lily, Max and Lucia.

Visitation will begin Saturday, June 29, 2024, 9:00 AM, Sacred Heart Church, Sinton. The Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be the same morning, 9:30 AM. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 AM.
