Taft- Maria Encinia Ozuna passed away on June 2, 2022. She was born in Taft, Texas on August 3, 1945 to Jose and Jovita Encinia. She married Manuel Ozuna on December 5, 1970, and were married for 51 years.
Maria worked as an LVN for over 40 years. She began her nursing career at Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas, and then work for over 20 years with Dr. Joe Pinkston in Sinton, Texas. She retired from nursing in 2015 after working for the Taft Shoreline Rehabilitation Center. In addition to her nursing career, she spent over 30 years working as a religious educator for Taft Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She was a First Communion and Confirmation teacher, teaching hundreds of students in Taft to receive their sacraments. Her life as a nurse and devout Catholic were both encapsulated in her work and numerous deeds in the community, helping anyone that needed help or care.
When Maria was not working, she spent her time tending to her garden and plants, and attending any and all games or events that her sons coached, or grandkids participated in. She was an avid supporter of her sons Efrain's and Juan's coaching and her grandkids' playing careers, often yelling at the referees and umpires to get it right. When she wasn't at their games, she was in the kitchen cooking for any hungry member of the family or community. At home, she loved watching western TV shows and movies with Manuel and the grandkids.
She is preceded in death by her son Efrain Ozuna, her parents Jose and Jovita Encinia, her brothers Dario Encinia, Sr. and Frank Encinia, Sr., and her in-laws, Juan and Deanira Ozuna.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Manuel Ozuna, the love of her life. She is also survived by her son Juan Ozuna (Laura) of Calallen, her daughter-in-law Jessica Schilling Ozuna (Efrain) of Taft, her grandchildren Rhyan, Rhyanna, Oscar, Efrain Jr., Christian, Juan Jose, Tristan, and Marley, and 2 great granddaughters, Iana and Rhylie. Her surviving siblings include brothers Santos, Jose Jr., Cruz, Juan, George, Macario, and David Encinia, and sisters Elevoria Pinon and Evangelina Riojas.
Visitation will begin Wednesday, June 8, 2022, 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Resthaven Funeral Home Chapel, Sinton. The Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be the same evening at 7:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in Taft, June 9, 2022 9:30 AM. Burial will follow at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery 11:00 AM. A reception to celebrate her life will be held at the VFW in Annaville at 2:00 PM.
