Marilyn Virginia Simonds

Corpus Christi - Marilyn Virginia Simonds was called home to the Lord on September 9, 2021, at the age of 75. She is survived by her son, Jason Simonds (Stephanie); grandchildren, Ashley and Clayton; sister, Sharon Brooks; nieces and nephews; her good friend, Larry Lewis; and many other friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otes Roy Simonds; and her parents, J. Frank and Carolyn A. Southard. The family wishes to thank her good friend, Larry Lewis for his friendship, love, support and care for Marilyn during the later years of her life. He is truly a blessing to us.

Marilyn was born January 8, 1946 in Dothan, AL, and lived her early life in Northwest Florida. While in grade school, she moved with her family to Petronila, TX and worked at her parents’ cotton gin until she graduated high school. Marilyn went on to attend Wharton County Junior College and transferred to Corpus Christi State University – earning a degree in Education. Marilyn and Roy fell in love and married in 1978. They stayed in Corpus Christi, and Marilyn started her career as an elementary school teacher. She wasn’t just born to teach, she was born to inspire others to change and to never give up, even when faced with challenges that seemed impossible. Marilyn retired in 2014 after 30+ years of teaching and had a positive influence on many children’s lives along the way.

After retirement, you would find Marilyn and friends at the Executive Surf Club supporting local bands and dancing the night away every weekend.  Proudly known as La Güera Loca, she loved to surprise folks on how old she truly was and how dancing kept her spirit alive!

Her kind and bright spirit will be remembered by all those whose lives she touched.
