Matilda "Mati" Mata Durand Obituary

Taft – Matilda (Mata) Durand, lovingly known as “Mati,” passed away peacefully on October 9, 2025 in Houston, Texas, at the age of 67, after a courageous and private battle with cancer.

Matilda was born on August 23, 1958 in Sinton, Texas to Matilde (Mendoza) and Enrique Mata, Sr. She is preceded in death by her parents and siblings Carlos Mata, Ricardo Mata, Consuelo Mata, Rodolfo Mata and Enrique Mata, Jr.

Raised in Taft, Texas, Matilda later moved to Corpus Christi after marrying Herman Carnes, but she remained closely connected to her roots—traveling daily to Taft for work and to visit her beloved family. Her passion for education led her to begin teaching at a young age, primarily at Petty Elementary in Taft. After later marrying George Durand and relocating to Victoria, she continued to share her love for teaching as a substitute at Vickers Elementary School. Over the course of 45 years, Matilda dedicated her life to teaching—specializing in Special Education and English as a Second Language for young children in Pre-K through 2nd grade. Her students adored her, many of whom remained in touch with her well into adulthood.

Matilda’s vibrant personality lit up every room she entered. Known for calling herself a “social butterfly,” she had an uncanny ability to bring people together, often organizing dinners and gatherings with friends and family. Her warmth, generosity, and genuine care for others left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was a talented crafter, especially known for her handmade wreaths and personalized gifts, which she often shared with loved ones.

Above all, Matilda’s proudest role was being a mother. She shared an extraordinary bond with her daughter, Crystal—they were not only mother and daughter but best friends. Matilda was actively involved in every aspect of Crystal’s life: leading her Girl Scout troop, helping her excel in kickball, cheering loudly at every school performance and proudly supporting her through her academic journey at Texas A&M University. She was Crystal’s biggest fan and unwavering supporter.

Matilda’s greatest joy in her later years came with the arrival of her grandson, Matthew, whom she adored deeply. Her dream of becoming a grandmother was fulfilled, and she embraced it with all the love and enthusiasm in her heart. She was also joyfully anticipating the arrival of a second grandson.

A woman of profound faith, Matilda was actively involved in her church community—teaching children’s Sunday School and participating in countless church events. She was known as a prayer warrior, always lifting others up in prayer, and her faith remained a source of strength throughout her life. She bravely overcame breast cancer in 2022 and faced a leukemia diagnosis in January 2025 with quiet strength and dignity, surrounded by her closest loved ones.

Matilda is survived by her devoted daughter, Crystal Hodgins, and husband Ryan; her beloved grandson, Matthew Hodgins; a grandson on the way; her husband, George Durand; and siblings Janie Suarez, Jesusa Hinojosa, Lupe James, and Rey Mata.
