Mikail "Mike" Chambers Obituary
Mike Chambers was born February 2, 1948, in Midland, Texas, to Wanda Mae Whiteaker and Jay Thomas Chambers. His life was filled with hard work, family, friendship, and a love for the simple things that made life meaningful.
On January 29, 1966, Mike married the love of his life, Brenda Joyce Smith—just four days shy of his 18th birthday. Their love story began when Brenda would ride her bicycle past the local burger joint where Mike was gathered with friends. From that beginning came a marriage, a family, and a lifetime of memories.
After they married, Mike and Brenda relocated to the Coastal Bend. They purchased land and settled in Papalote, where they raised their two sons, Michael and Richard. Mike taught his boys the things he loved most—how to hunt, how to fish, and how to appreciate the outdoors. Their home became a gathering place for family and friends, filled with parties, celebrations, laughter, and Brenda’s many afternoon coffee breaks. Together, Mike and Brenda became Nanny and Pawpaw to many children throughout the years, leaving a lasting impression on countless young lives.
Mike made his living in construction, working for Goldsten, Berry Brothers, CCC Group, and Coonrod Electric Co. Over the course of his career, he held many positions of leadership, but he would tell you that his favorite job was simply running a backhoe. He took great pride in his work and even competed in the Backhoe Olympics several times throughout his career.
Outside of work, Mike was happiest outdoors. He loved fishing, deer hunting, and the occasional duck hunt with friends. He was also a longtime member of the Papalote Volunteer Fire Department, giving his time and helping his community for many years.
Mike was well known throughout South Bee County for his ability to repair just about any small engine. Underneath the shade tree, he spent countless hours troubleshooting and repairing lawnmowers and tractors, visiting with friends along the way. He could make a stubborn engine come back to life, although he was known to dread the simpler jobs—especially a weed eater or chainsaw. Those shade-tree conversations and friendships became just as much a part of his legacy as the things he repaired.
Mike was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 42 years, Brenda Chambers; his parents, Wanda Mae Whiteaker and Jay Chambers; his brothers, Larry, Ronnie, Kevin, and Bruce Chambers; and his grandsons, Joshua and Dustin Chambers.
He leaves behind a family who will carry his memory forward: his brother, Gary Chambers, and sister, Donna Chambers; his sons, Michael (Amanda) Chambers of Skidmore and Richard (Jennifer) Chambers of Monahans; grandchildren Cody (Rebekah) Chambers, Mikaila (Isaac) Salinas, Rylie Chambers, Chason Chambers, Colt Chambers, and Beau Chambers; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and loved ones.
Mike’s greatest legacy is the family he and Brenda built together and the many lives they touched along the way. The love that began with a young girl riding her bicycle past a burger joint grew into a family that continues to carry their story. Though Mike is no longer here to sit beneath the shade tree, share a cup of coffee, tell a story, work on an engine, or take his family hunting and fishing, the lessons he taught and the memories he created will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
