Taft – Tomasa Martinez Sturgeon passed away peacefully at her home in Taft on June 22, 2025 surrounded by her family. She was 102.
Tomasa was born March 7, 1923 in McAllen, Texas to Eloisa (Melendez) and Francisco Martinez. She was a loving wife to her husband, Guillermo Z. Sturgeon. Together, they made a home in Taft where they raised their family of eight. Tomasita was a devoted member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where she was a very active member of the Cursillos, The Catholic Daughters and the Pope John Paul II rosary group. Tomasita traveled to Europe and Mexico City on several occasions. She was a frequent traveler to several casino destinations. Tomasita was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxillary group. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt who will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
Preceding in death are her husband: Guillermo Z. Sturgeon, Sr.; granddaughter: Edelina Sturgeon; son-in-law: Mike R. Morin; parents: Francisco and Eloisa Martinez; and 10 siblings.
Survivors include 4 sons: Guillermo Sturgeon, Jr. (Patsy) from Aransas Pass, Texas; James Sturgeon (Nelda) from Austin, Texas; Oscar Sturgeon from Taft, Texas; Eddie Sturgeon (Alma) from San Marcos, Texas; 4 daughters: Mattie Lee Morin, Nancy S. Espinoza (Juan), Ada Martinez (Romeo), all from Taft, Texas; Sandra Tafolla (David) from San Antonio, Texas; 25 grandchildren; 97 great-grandchildren; 27 great-great grandchildren; and sister: Josefina Hinojosa from Taft, Texas.
Visitation will begin Wednesday, June 25, 2025, 3:00 PM at the Immaculate Conception Church in Taft. The Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held the same evening, 7:00 PM at the church. Visitation will continue Thursday, June 26, 9:00 AM at the church with the Funeral Mass being celebrated beginning at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow in Lamas Memorial Park Cemetery, Taft.
Pallbearers will be Billy Sturgeon, Roland Martinez, Edward Sturgeon, David Tafolla, Matthew Sturgeon, Moises Espinoza and Mark Morin.
